At 57 years young, Glenda calls the beautiful NSW South Coast home, where she balances life as a part-time primary school teacher, creative entrepreneur, and devoted family member. Living with her husband, three sons, a tuxedo cat and a five-year-old Labrador—Glenda embodies the joy of life, even in the face of challenges.
In 2017, when she was just 49, Glenda faced a life-altering diagnosis: stage 4 epithelial high-grade serous ovarian cancer. For six months, she battled alarming symptoms—persistent lower back pain, unexpected changes in her menstrual cycle, and a sense of heaviness in her abdomen. A lump in her neck finally pushed her to seek a second opinion after her previous doctor dismissed her concerns. “I knew something wasn’t right,” she recalls.
On her husband’s 56th birthday, she received the devastating news. “Telling my boys was the hardest part,” she shares, reflecting on the weight of uncertainty and the need to reassure her young sons—then aged 15, 14, and 12. But rather than succumb to despair, Glenda took charge of her health. “I wanted to live my best life,” she says, implementing lifestyle changes including, moving to a plant-based diet, practicing meditation, and regular exercise.
Through chemotherapy, surgery, and recovery, Glenda’s determination never wavered. Now, she is passionate about sharing her story as an ambassador for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF). “There is real hope,” she emphasizes. “Women diagnosed with ovarian cancer need to know they have choices in their treatment and journey.”
Frocktober is Glenda’s way of spreading that message far and wide. “When I was invited to be part of this fabulous campaign, I jumped at the chance! Who wouldn’t want to be pampered while raising awareness for such a vital cause?” she laughs. “But more importantly, I want to inspire hope in other women.”
The highlight of her experience so far has been collaborating with the amazing team behind the OCRF, creating a positive and joyful atmosphere that resonates with the spirit of Frocktober. “It’s about celebrating life and starting important conversations about ovarian cancer,” Glenda explains.
Glenda’s commitment to the OCRF is fueled by her belief in the power of education and research. “We need better treatments and, most importantly, a screening test for ovarian cancer,” she insists. With advancements in genetic understanding and treatment options, Glenda is hopeful for a future where fewer women face the heartbreak of this disease.
With Frocktober well and truly here, Glenda invites everyone to join in. “Wear your best frock or suit, and let’s celebrate together! Whether it’s a cozy gathering or a grand fundraiser, every bit helps raise awareness and funds for ovarian cancer research,” she encourages. “Together, we can make a difference and create a future filled with hope for women everywhere.”
So, this October, join Glenda and the OCRF, frock up, and help us kick ovarian cancer to the curb—one fabulous frock at a time!
