United by fashion for ovarian cancer progress

Meet the Dame Frockstars: a group of remarkable women from across Australia who joined forces to make a difference.

Connected by their love of fashion and their dedication to improving outcomes for women and girls affected by ovarian cancer, their story showcases the power of collective action and sisterhood.

We sat down with the team to talk all things Frocktober!

Imparting their words of wisdom, read on as they share some valuable insights to help you make the most of Frocktober, whether you're a seasoned participant or a first-time frocker, participating in a team or riding solo.

Where it all began

Sue, the driving force behind the team, started her Frocktober journey in 2016. Just before her first Frocktober, Sue’s aunt was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, further igniting Sue’s determination to fundraise for the OCRF and contribute to life saving research.

When Sue took a brief hiatus, her friend Amanda took charge and in 2019 two online communities united: the Ruby Olive Rockstars and the Australian Dames of Fashion to be what we know it as today, the Dame Frockstars.

A force beyond fashion

The Dame Frockstars are united by a passion for fashion, but also by their commitment to make a difference. As team member, Tineke, so aptly puts it “We all have a deep desire for change. We know that an early detection test would drastically improve survival rates and it would be so amazing to see one developed and successfully implemented, but that won’t happen without research.”

Each group member has their own reasons for supporting the OCRF. Many have been personally affected by ovarian cancer, watching loved ones go through gruelling treatment, with some group members sadly losing their loved ones to the cruel disease. Together they use Frocktober to channel their grief into a collective force for change, as Allison attests, “I’ve lost a friend and two relatives to ovarian cancer. Their memory inspires me every year to participate in Frocktober.”

While others, like Hannah, have no personal connection but are passionate advocates for women’s health, “I am a daughter, sister, mother, teacher and friend, and it is for all of these beautiful women that I frock up each year.”

The funds raised through Frocktober allow the OCRF to fund the most promising ovarian cancer research in Australia and New Zealand, with the greatest potential for impact. Currently, just 49% of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer are expected to survive beyond 5 years. Women and girls deserve better.

Through groundbreaking research into treatment, recurrence, early detection and prevention we can improve outcomes for women and girls everywhere.

The power of collective action

By uniting as a team, they stay motivated and driven. Sue reminds us that “the power of people united by a common goal cannot be underestimated!”

For Danielle, being part of a team is inspiring, “Being amongst a community of amazing women from across Australia has been so wonderful! The team has been so helpful; we encourage each other, swap stories and ideas and cheer each other on. Many hands, minds and hearts working together make it very light work! It also helps seeing that team total rise and rise across the month.”

Avyril echoes the sentiment, emphasizing the camaraderie derived from their collective efforts “It is so much easier and fun doing this together, we’re all on the same mission to not only do the best we can to raise funds and awareness, but it also makes it fun. We are proud of our achievements and are inspired by each other.”

The Dame Frockstars are a testament to the power of collective action. To date, they have raised over $150,000 and have been the top fundraising team since their inception four years ago.

How do they do it: Tips and tricks from the Dame Frockstars

Maintaining momentum is a crucial factor in any month-long fundraising campaign, and they appear to have mastered the art. So how do they do it? Danielle tells us “Connection is key! We have a Facebook group where we share ideas, photos, questions, and words of encouragement. We genuinely care for each other and celebrate each other along this journey.”

Through their Facebook group they support each other. “Even when members have taken a break from active campaigning, they have remained part of our Facebook group and provided moral support and encouraging advice. I’m most proud of inspiring others to support this cause, and love encouraging them through the month by leading from the front with enthusiasm,” Says – Sue.

Hannah reflects on the fact that ‘two heads are better than one.’ “After multiple years it can get exhausting finding new and innovative ways to ask people to donate and share information about ovarian cancer, but the camaraderie and encouragement from the team, the, “Hey I love your outfit today!”, or, “Ohhh… love how you phrased that, can I borrow your words for tomorrow?” means I don’t feel alone.”

Some final words of encouragement

If you’re thinking about signing up for Frocktober this year, the Dame Frockstar’s have some words of encouragement:

  • Have fun with it - remember Frocktober is all about having fun and feeling fabulous, while raising vital funds and awareness.
  • Don’t be discouraged if you don’t have an extensive wardrobe. Get creative, borrow from friends, style one dress different ways or hit the op shops.
  • Step outside your comfort zone – it will inspire others.
  • Frock with a friend or team, life is better together. Nothing beats camaraderie.
  • Be brave! It can be confronting posting on social media every day, especially if its not something you usually do. But you’ll be surprised by the support you’ll receive from your friends, family and fellow Frocker’s.
  • Just do it! It’s lots of fun and it makes you feel proud for your part in the greater good.

The Dame Frockstars embody the spirit of Frocktober. Frocktober isn't just about fashion; it's a movement that empowers individuals to make a difference. By embracing creativity, collaboration, and a little bit of fun, you can frock up with purpose and help raise much-needed funds for ovarian cancer research. So, gather your fabulous frocks, rally your friends, and let your unique style shine as you join the Frocktober community to raise funds for life-saving ovarian cancer research.
